Considering it’s a global partner of Art Basel, it’s no surprise that BMW Group has taken to the international art fair to present its famed BMW art cars in Miami and Hong Kong for the past several years. Last week in Miami, the 19th BMW Art Car made its debut, featuring a design by the L.A.-based conceptual artist John Baldessari. He joins the ranks of previous contributors that include Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, and David Hockney. Baldessari’s M6 GTLM has a minimalist white base, accented with bright pops of color — including a large red dot on the roof — and the word “FAST” inscribed on the driver’s door in large block letters. On the opposite door, there’s a picture of the car itself, in something of a meta flourish. Its first race will be up Florida’s Atlantic coast at next month’s 24 Hours of Daytona.
