Inventive new technology makes the Honda self-balancing motorcycle possible. Dubbed “Riding Assist,” the innovation was originally developed for the company’s ASIMO humanoid robot, as well as its UNI-CUB self-balancing scooter. The system eschews traditional gyroscopes, achieving equilibrium instead through an adjustment of the angle of the front fork. Specifically, it’s lowered when the motorcycle’s speed slows down to three miles per hour or less. Additionally, the front wheel makes tiny, automatic adjustments — thousands of times per second — to maintain its upright position, whether the rider is on board or not. No word on whether Honda actually plans to put Riding Assist into production.
