Designed by Jaguar Land Rover‘s Special Vehicle Operations unit, the Land Rover Project Hero SUV was made for the Austrian Red Cross, featuring a customized Discovery SUV equipped with a roof-mounted drone landing system. The drone setup is equipped with a newly developed system that allows for self-centering and magnetic retention, enabling a small UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to land even while the vehicle is in motion. In emergency situations like earthquakes, landslides and avalanches, the airborne drone can send live footage to rescue teams on the ground so they know how and where to respond. As for the SUV itself, the floor at the back of the Discovery slides out to create a mobile work surface, while there’s plenty of radio gear and a wide range of power and plug configurations to fit various regions. For now, the vehicle will be used in complex rescue simulations to help develop new methods.
