While Japan may be known for its blazing-fast bullet trains, the country’s new Shiki-Shima Train reveals expertise in the world of luxury rail travel. The ten-car, 17-suite train was designed by Ken Okuyama, whose resume includes stints at Porsche, Ferrari, and Maserati. His concept includes glass-enclosed panoramic observation cars, and suites that feature a working fireplace or a second-floor loft. Passengers will also enjoy food from Japan’s first Michelin-starred chef, whose kaiseki-style menus will constantly change to reflect the region through which the train is traveling. The Shiki-Shima will make one-, two-, and three-night round trips throughout northeast Japan, with nightly rates ranging from $3,000 to $10,000. Despite the luxury pricing, the train is booked solid until 2018.
