Clear Lake Cottage / MJMA

Located in Central Ontario, Canada, the Clear Lake Cottage was designed by MJMA (MacLennan Jaunkalns Miller Architects) as a vacation residence for a family of five, offering a dwelling that’s modern and open but still imbued with a rustic “cottage feel.”  The structure, nestled within a forest, has an orientation that faces toward the east, providing lakefront views while also collecting direct light and warmth in the morning. Inside are a master suite, bedrooms, utility/den and living space, covered with a singular roof that achieves an ambiguously modern vernacular feel, but is also useful in terms of snow and water shedding. Finally, inspired by Scandinavian fishing shacks, the building is clad in black corrugated metal, a cost-effective measure that also delivers a raw, industrial look, countering the warm wooded interior.
