Avocado Acres (Aa) House

Located in the coastal town of Encinitas, California, the Avocado Acres (Aa) House is a collaborative effort from architect Lloyd Russell and local development firm Surfside Projects. Their goal was to build an energy-efficient modern dwelling with sustainable materials, featuring design cues inspired by iconic mid-century design, including the Case Study Houses of Southern California and developer Joseph Eichler’s modern tract homes. The U-shaped structure spans three pavilions, all of which share a sloping curved roof and courtyard, while the straight lines and angular street front geometry offers a stark contrast to the curvilinear roofline. Inside, a simple color palette nicely complements the concrete walls and natural wood tones used on the vaulted ceiling, flooring and cabinetry.
